X-LARGE: Old School Streetwear is New Again

November 19, 2015 BY WATM STAFF

It can’t be easy reviving an iconic brand from the ‘90s that still resonates fondly in the hearts of fashion OGs, while also appealing to a younger audience who were not even born when the brand was blazing a trail in the nascent streetwear scene. But the team at X-LARGE is successfully doing just that-- drawing on ‘90s references, revamping iconic pieces, collaborating with ‘90s throwback brands like Alpha Industries and Diadora while mixing in new styles for AW16.

Opened by Eli Bonerz and Adam Silverman in 1991, the X-LARGE store catered to their diverse community and was quickly adopted by personalities such as Mike D of the Beastie Boys, Spike Jonze, and Chloe Sevigny. The X-LARGE clothing brand was a true reflection of its surroundings and Los Angeles lifestyle. The brand drew inspiration from work wear, vintage, and club scene aesthetics; to mid-century design, skateboarding and music influences.

The brand, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary will be at Capsule Las Vegas, February 15-17.

(C) What is the underlying theme / inspiration for the collection?

XL: X-LARGE’s AW16 collection celebrates the brand’s 25th anniversary with “Generation XL”. Fittingly, we drew inspiration from our founders’ interests in 60’s sci-fi films, mid-century modern design, utilitarian aesthetics and the 90’s whimsical culture that surrounded the X-LARGE store in Los Feliz, Los Angeles. We want to celebrate a time of individuality and imagination, and help break the monotony of today’s fast fashion.

(C) What key items should we look out for? XL: Traditional outerwear, updated with modern stylings and fabrics: Starting from a traditional buffalo plaid work jacket, we reinterpreted the “Knox Flannel Shirt" as a flannel zip-up shirt jacket. “Century Track Jacket” combines hints of 90’s nostalgic colors and the popular track jacket silhouette. “Pacific Heights Anorak Jacket” in ripstop nylon and custom tree leaf camouflage is inspired by athletic and sailing windbreakers.

(C) Tell us about your upcoming collaborations:

XL: In celebration of X-LARGE’s 25th silver anniversary we collaborate with Alpha Industries on the iconic MA-1 bomber and connect with 24Kilates boutique (Barcelona & Bangkok) and Diadora to give our take on the classic N.9000 model.

(C) Who do you have in mind when you design the collection?

XL: X-LARGE has the benefit of appealing to multiple generations throughout our lifespan and influence on streetwear. Never forgetting the early adopters that helped cultivate a new subculture; but also keeping in mind a new generation where streetwear has become the norm.
