VISVIM held their NYFW presentation for a third season just last week in Industria Superstudio. Their SS15 presentation is the second season that both their men's and women's collections were open for viewing. Designer Hiroki Nakamura continues to reference vintage Americana but took cues specifically from the customization of cars in the 1950s and summertime. "I look to many things in my travels for inspiration and I came across a Model A Ford Pick-up Truck from the 1930s... I strive to make product that has similar character," Nakamura said, and his cult following is a testament to that.
The Pick-up truck served as a backdrop to his collection - pieces were built for longevity much like the truck itself. The inspiration was taken literally on oxford shirts with sleeve details that nod to vintage automobiles, parking lots, gas stations and drive-in movie theaters. The outerwear took an indirect inspiration however - embroidery was done by hand and bomber jackets were reversible which speaks to what goes into the breaking down and rebuilding of hot rods. The most notable mens pieces in the collection are the hand-painted, military details on outerwear and Japanese inspired designs that rested on shirts and kimono robes.
The women's collection was less about cars and more about the fun, nostalgic American summer. Floral and custom vacation patterns capture the American spirit as well as their offering of high waisted jeans, vintage baseball caps and old western dresses. Nakamura's respect for old American culture and his unique spin and interpretation is why VISVIM is highly sought after by those of all walks of life.
