“We felt like there was a need for a store like ours on the north side of Williamsburg, close to the park and the hotels,” said Hannah Gluckstern, co-owner of Brooklyn’s Concrete + Water. She and her husband, JD—along with their Cocker Spaniel, Henry—opened the shop in October 2014. Hannah spent many years working as a stylist for Lucky Magazine and Shopbob, while JD is a nightlife veteran and talented DJ.
Originally, JD had plans to open a nightclub, but when those didn’t come to fruition, the couple decided moved forward with Concrete + Water. The shop mixes women’s apparel and accessories, menswear, and home goods. Ladies can find lines like First Rite, Ilana Kohn, and SEA, while dudes can shop brands like Corridor, Soulland, and Wood Wood.
“We’ve lived in the neighborhood for a long time, so we know the area and were really particular about where we wanted to be located,” said Hannah. “We were thrilled when we found this space. It kind of ticked all the boxes of our ideal space—single story, skylights, backyard, and the perfect spot. We knew it was the one immediately.”
