After spending over 15 years with the Gap company, Todd Barket went solo opening a small San Francisco shop called UNIONMADE in 2009. The shop housed several brands, many of which manufacture in the United States. GQ and SF Weekly gave UNIONMADE a nod for being one of the best stores independent menswear shops in the nation.
Now with a second location in Larkspur, CA, UNIONMADE is now one of the few must see retail locations on the west coast. We caught up with our friend Todd to talk fashion and summertime.
Which collections are you most looking forward to seeing and why?
I have a few lines that I’m always excited to see I still get excited by Gitman Vintage because I’m always amazed at the range and the sense of humor that the shirts have. I’m also impressed that they can own a category and always reinvent.
We’re also excited to see our Japanese friends from Orslow, Hollywood Ranch Market, and Journal Standard.
How do you see men’s style evolving for next summer?
I know I’m getting older, but I think people are cleaning up a bit and pulling themselves together and focusing on the details. You don’t see sloppy Summer clothes like you used to a few years ago. Guys aren’t scared to play with short lengths and other silhouettes.
Do you sell anything in your store besides fashion? What’s hot now?
We do home and print. Print does really well for us. If they can’t afford a shirt they will spend $7 on a magazine and that’s a way for them to participate in the brand. Plus, we love books. It’s a great way to personalize the stores.
What’s in store for your store? Do you have any news, or major plans you’d like to share with us?
We have some fun capsules for the remainder of the year. A Gitman Vintage/Liberty capsule, Indigo, and a lovely Shetland Capsule that is meant to be an update to Harris Tweed from last year.
We’re also doing a small collection with United Arrows that will be sold at Unionmade and United Arrows in Tokyo.
