Q & A : Onia Resort + Summer '12

February 09, 2012 BY CAPSULESNEWS

Even though it's been a relatively warm summer in NYC, we're still feeling the cold. That's why we took a moment when these images from Onia's latest collection came across our desk. This New York City based brand was started in 2009 by Steven Alan veteran, Carl Cunow. As you can see, the line couldn't be better looking, but as swimwear aficionados will tell you, the devil is in the details and Onia excels in that arena as well. metal closures on drawstrings prevent fraying, durable zippers can withstand abuse from sand, sea and surfing, fine mesh linings ensure these are garments that look as good as they perform. We asked Carl a little bit more about the brand and the latest collection that will travel to (capsule) Las Vegas. - Marisa, thesigother.com

WATM: What is the story behind how and why Onia got started?

Cunow: I saw a void in the market, and for years could never find the right pair of swim shorts that fit me. I always had an entrepreneurial spirit and wanted to go out on my own, but didnt really know what I wanted to do until just a few years ago. I learned the product development + production side of the business from when I worked at Steven Alan and decided to start Onia 2 years ago.

WATM: What was the main inspiration for this season?

Cunow: Since we are a swim brand, we dont technically have a Fall/winter season. During January + February markets we show Summer 12 + Resort 12 (which ships in October). People call it Holiday,Cruise, Resort. The inspiration for Resort 12 was a blue story. I just got back from my honeymoon in the Maldives and I was fascinated by the color of the water there, it is really incredible. But moreover, I am inspirited by the many different colors of the ocean water, by the many shades of blue. So you will see many ocean blues, aquas, in the line. All of our prints also will incorporate the blue story. Its pretty exciting.

WATM: What kinds of fabrics or materials are you highlighting?

Cunow: For this coming season we are continuing with the Liberty Art Fabrics. They are fantastic and they are our exclusive designs, that we chose from their archives and re-colored/designed on a 100% nylon super soft swim fabric. We are also continuing with our Italian Memory Fabric, which is a yarn dyed fabric woven in Como, Italy. Some really cool innovative fabrics to show at the show!
