Paris Preview: Dobson

June 23, 2015 BY LUKE ALLARD

In the post-industrial age 21st century, the concept of workwear no longer means what it used to. The performance requirements of contemporary workwear are fundamentally different to superseded models. Engineers of software, architects of information, mechanics of nanotechnology, builders of the digital universe now explore the scope of human achievement from ultra clean studios and workshops. The cut of a luxury suit may be impractical for this environment but the wool fabric itself is precision engineered. From the remote British seaside town of Norfolk, Nina Dobson creates her eponymous label, which launched for AW14, offering a progressive vision of workwear staples, for a contemporary workforce. Using wool, the original technical fabric Dobson Clothing presents a fresh approach to daily dressing.

Dobson has designed menswear and accessories for a variety of mainly British brands for over a decade - formal and casual, catwalk and wholesale – and most recently served as Head of Menswear at an LVMH brand.

We reached out to Nina to learn more about her and her SS16 collection. Stop by her booth at Capsule Paris this weekend.

Tell us about your brand – what is the inspiration behind the collection?

DOBSON creates refined workwear cut from the finest British suiting fabric.

Inspired by workwear pieces designed to withstand wear and tear, grease and oil - the practical performance characteristics of a DOBSON garment are attuned for a new industrial era. Wool is the original technical fabric and forms a staple part of the DOBSON range across all seasons - performing with the body to help regulate your temperature, it is also crease resistant, naturally durable and minimizes odor. Although the garments use inspiration from mid-century styles, our utility garments never ‘replicate’ or feel ‘vintage’.

What is a key item for SS16?

The re-work of our classic over-shirt in a summer-weight wool - in either cactus green or tomato red checks. Each utilizes the woven selvedge from the wool fabric down the full length of the front edge.

Describe your customer:

We make garments for a new wave of engineers and pioneers of the digital age. DOBSON has already picked up a cult following from the creative industries - from denim-heads who understand superior fabrics and are familiar with ‘selvedge’ in their jeans, to architects and designers who revere simplicity and understated quality.
