Tis the season for wash and go, and with menswear designer Alex Drexler, au naturel is always in style. The NY-based designer's easy pieces -- from the classic collared shirt, to the perfect lightweight trouser make it easy to throw on and go, without looking like it. And, while you may not know it from the precise lines, and fine fabrics, the designer draws his inspiration from the chaotic backdrop of NYC. This staple of men's publications, like GQ and Esquire, may be the perfect next addition to a closet near you. -- Amber Davis
(c ) What is your inspiration for SS17?
AM: For Spring 2017, we were inspired by the culture of Mexico and how they use a lot of stones, tiles, and bricks for design. We love how a lot of natural materials. We have tried to incorporate these same patterns and colors into our clothing through the patterns in our shirts and colors of our tees. The other element of Mexico we love is the usage of different plants. We went to an agave plantation and learned how agave has so many usages other than as sweetener. They use it to make alcohol, parchment paper, needles, threads, and other usages. It is a foundation Our shirting is almost similar to Mexico's agave in that it is used in many different ways. Shirting is one of our foundations and we use it as the basis behind not only our woven shirts but our shorts, jackets, baseball hats, and other accessories.
(c ) What can your clients always count on seeing? What's new?
AM: Alex Mill was built on the idea of finding the perfect shirt and tee. Thus, in that sense, what our clients can always count on seeing it a great assortment of shirts and tees and in a variety of fabrics, textures, colors, patterns, and washes. For Spring 17, we've pushed the envelope farther and sourced special Indian Madras, Japanese double gauze, and a variety of new fabrics. What we're especially excited about that's new for Spring 17 is a made in USA indigo capsule, herringbone patterned workwear styles cut and sewn in downtown LA, and a variety of new fabrics and colors.
(c ) Which pieces do women tend to sneak into their wardrobes?
AM: Alex Mill has always been a go-to for women wanting to rock the boyfriend style. Indeed, many women have learned about us through our partnership with Gwyneth Paltrow's GOOP where we sell our men's items in smaller sizes. In that sense, I would say that go to items include our button down shirts, our Alex Mill X baseball hats, and our 100% cashmere beanies.
(c ) Piece that you think everyone must own?
AM: I would say everyone must own our Alex Mill standard tees. Despite all the t-shirts out there, it's still hard to find the prefect t-shirt with the right cut, fabric, and hand feel. Tees are the ultimate man's staple – they are practically a daily uniform. Our standard tees are cut+sewn in downtown Los Angeles, pigment dyed for an ageless look, and washed for extra softness. They are a must own.
