Our Up North Friends Muttonhead Chat With Us About SS15, Maple Bacon and Nantucket Vibes

August 14, 2014 BY WE ARE THE MARKET

Classic, well made (in Canada!) and easy to wear, we are definitely fans of Muttonhead. We recently caught up with our friends from Up North before they headed off to present at Capsule Las Vegas. We learned about Nanaimo bars and their most recent inspirations. It was fun. Check it out below!

Who are you?

Muttonhead

What is the brand known for?

Casual unisex sportswear.

You guys take a lot of pride in being a Canadian-made brand. What are some Canadian things (foods, cities, shops, national landmarks) you feel the world should know about?

Obviously poutine, but some lesser known and equally delicious foods are Nanaimo bars, Tourtière, and of course a classic Caesar topped with maple bacon. Some of our favorite places are: Toronto Island in Toronto, Tofino on the west coast, and Peggy’s Cove outside of Halifax.

It’s summer time and parks count as national landmarks, right? When in Vancouver, bike around the seawall in Stanley Park, and in Montreal head to Parc du Mont-Royal for Piknic Électronik. When in Toronto, head to our first flagship store and design studio on Roncesvalles Ave and check out our assortment of North-American made goods!

What inspired you to start a brand?

When we started the line in 2009 there weren’t many unisex lines out there, and as the brand was predominately outerwear, we were constantly looking for snowboard apparel that wasn’t pink and covered in flowers. We wanted something you could wear on and off the hill and gravitated towards men’s apparel. Hence Muttonhead was born and we have been hustling ever since.

What is the overall inspiration for SS15?

Our S/S’15 Collection, Dog Days of Summer, is inspired by the classic North American cottager who spends their weekends sippin' bevies in Montauk or cruising around Nantucket on their moped.

What are some key items or silhouettes for SS15?

Over the past year we worked closely with our retailers to perfect our fits and nail our price points. The result is a range of products for the everyday cottager. We've brought back our classic sportswear cuts and paired them with some custom Canadian-milled fabrics to cater to cottagers both young and old. The collection features lightweight, multi-functional fabrics, many of which take inspiration from the wavy positive vibrations of Montauk. Similarly, the color scheme for this season directly reflects the coast of Martha's Vineyard with the beachy shades of blue and grey with an incorporation of muted colors.

Any advice for up-and-coming brands looking to make an impact today?

Find a gap in the market and be prepared to work very hard for no pay, for a while. This isn’t an easy business to start, and combined with the fact that it is over saturated with many brands just as good as your own, passion, hard work and a little luck will bring success.
