BLISS LAU

Name: Bliss Lau

Title: Creator

Twitter handle: @blisslau

Where do you live?

Physically, I live in NoLIta. In spirit, I live in Hawaii.

Describe your personal style:

Clothing as a canvas for my jewelry, simple shapes that create positive or negative windows of space to expose the skin and the chains.

What style advice would you share with others?

Dress for your body type, not for the trend.

What book are you currently reading or want to read?

This depends on the time of day. For Saturday afternoon, I'm thinking of my home and how I want to decorate . . . so I am reading Home Is Where The Heart Is?, by Ilse Crawford. It's an interesting subject to question your needs and the experience you gain or lose by virtue of how we design our interior spaces.

Before bed I switch between A Spy In The House Of Love by Anais Nin, and The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. I suppose the decision of what to read is purely based on how sexy or unsexy I feel! I am currently reading Little Birds.

Favorite restaurant?

In Hawaii? Peace Cafe in Honolulu, best vegan food and coffee in the islands! In NoLIta? Rubirosa.

Favorite hotel?

In Hawaii? The Four Seasons on Lana'i; there is nothing better than being the only one on the beach. In NYC? The Standard in the summer.

Favorite thing you own?

A conceptual piece of fashion-apparel-wall-art by Shinichiro Arakawa from his 2001 RTW collection in Paris. I have had it on my wall for years now, it's a black, members-only style jacket cut so that it is melting into the wall on a huge black canvas that becomes the jacket.

Favorite blog?

Theformulablog. It's where I get all my favorite makeup finds, and I love the pictures and profiles.

Best thing you ever ate in NYC?

This changes every week! This week . . . the handmade tofu and EN in the West Village. It just melts in your mouth!

Do you have any side hustles or hobbies that you engage in on top of your primary job?

On the side, I have been inventing different ways of infusing alcoholdefinitely just a hobby for now! I'm into spicy though . . .

What are you listening to these days?

I just started dressing Morgan from M83, loving them for sure.

Do you have any funny Capsule-related experiences you'd like to share?

Seriously good people watching! Some of the best, I think!

Did you do anything fun this summer?

This summer, I went off-roading on a tiny island in Hawaii in search of petroglyphs and a shipwreck! Found the shipwreck but I fear the petroglyphs may have been hidden under the sand. Fun either way!

The collection:

What are the overall key influences for SS13?

The collection is based on the hundreds of varieties created through taking a piece of jewelry and deconstructing it into disconnected parts. I wanted to give my customer the freedom of choice, to decide how and when to wear each design, layered or individual. To truly understand, you will have to visit my booth and see the collection!

What are some key colors, fabrics, and items?

Colors in jewelry come down to stones, blue is my chosen color this season. I also have transitioned from matte finish to shiny!

What's new for your brand for SS13?

I am expanding my BLISS LAU FINE collection this season with much more silver and gold sexy jewelry that can be worn directly on the body. I also expanded into leather belts, form fitting waist belts that are simple and elegant.

The collection:

What are the overall key influences for SS13?

KAHLO's SS13 collection was inspired by the artworks of Australian artist Del Kathryn Barton and her intricate and meticulous technique. Focusing intensely on the quality of the fabrics and process of houw the garments are made, both Del Kathryn Barton's artwork and KAHLO's collection reflect femininity, power, and strength and show a dedication to perfection.

What are some key colors, fabrics, and items?

Echoing Barton's dreamlike palette, colours of washed blueberry, avocado, mushroom, white, grey marl, olive, nude, black, charcoal, tan, and tangerine are used throughout the collection, marking the label's first foray into brights.

In this collection we explored perforated leather. It is such a time consuming and intricate process to perforate every skin of leather prior to production but the end result is worth it.

We want to become known as the go-to label for amazing, quality leather pieces and with techniques such as perforating, we offer unique garments that fill a gap in the market for high-end, timeless pieces. Our leather pieces are individually hand-made in Australia and I think our customers really appreciate that.

What's new for your brand for SS13?

KAHLO is collaborating with a well-known Australian shoe brand which is an amazing new experience. We are also in the early stages of planning our show for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia 2013.

We are proud of how far KAHLO has come in the last year. There are many more potential opportunities that will present themselves in the future and we are excited and eagerly anticipating new experiences that will help us grow, learn, and develop.

What are you listening to these days?

Ludwig Persik! His EP is amazing. And my staplesTelevision, Siouxie, and The Banshees, The Monks . . .

The collection:

What are the overall key influences for SS13?

Texture and the sensation of touching . . . and a lot of Sheila Hicks!

What are some key colors, fabrics, and items?

A lot of bright blues and reds! The necklaces are made with soft, hand-dyed fibers that are woven into modern and graphic shapes. the chain-wrapped versions are excitingly tactilethey're eye-catching necklaces that are extremely soothing to wear and touch.

The fiber pieces are accompanied by futuristic bronze rings and bracelets, cast with the maker's fingerprints. Such texture brings a softness and sense of history the metal. My favorite bronze pieces are our irregular stack bracelets, which mimic the layers of an oyster shell while reflecting light like a mirror.

I'm very excited about how the "maker's hand" travels into my fine jewelry collection of 14kt gold earrings and rings. Cast from pinched clay forms, the jewelry is dainty and poeticthey preserve traces of the clay, fingerprints, and other "happy accidents"!

Our rings are especially elegantin addition to their texture, they take the bold contours of circles and triangles and read like symbols across your fingers when worn at once.

What's new for your brand for SS13?

This season WWAKE's campaign developed into an extensive photography project in itself. With the creative force of Shay Platz and Mike Anderson, we unified my interest in micro textures, contemporary sculpture, and dutch painting in a set of beautiful photos! We're printing the full set in a book soon.
