Once we saw Katie Eary's AW13 film for Style.com, we knew we had to get all the behind-the-scenes info on the edgy concept behind the video. We caught up with the designer to get all the details, and see what's on her plate now that the AW13 season is behind us.
Tell us a bit about how the video came about. Who did you work on it with?
I worked with Vicky Lawton (@rankinstudios) on this film. We have done these films now for 5 seasons. I love working with her! Way Perry styled it ( we have been working together for 3 years now!) and Adam De Cruz and Teiji for hair. A very tight knit team.
Tell us a bit about the concept-- we love the letters spelling out your name. Genius!
The film was made especially for style.com so we wanted to create something short and sweet with a bit of a punch. Starting by creating 360-degree camera, and a baroque chair, we went from there really. A place for our new age vampires to play/hang out! The letters were a nice touch! Vickys idea!
The music is really strong- how did you pick that track for your video?
I wanted a strong beat to keep the general vibe quite youthful and fun, I also wanted something quite new that not many people would have heard. A$AP Mob fill the bill. We all crowd round the computer to choose the track with the most interesting changes in beats and verse.
Your collection features some really strong graphic prints what are some of the key items for AW13?
I think the key items from AW13 are- the tailored jackets with leather sleeves, neoprene rose print biker and the Rose print jeans. And for the girls- the lace up skirt and rose printed bell sleeve chiffon shirt.
In general, hows business? Have you started on SS14 yet? What's inspiring you now?
Business is going well, I am really enjoying designing again. The last 2 seasons I have been excited to do another collection! It took a long time to get back to that point... I'm not sure what happened, I think the first 3 years were so soooo hard you wouldn't believe, so I constantly compare when I feel low and have to remind myself how far I've come.
Now that the season's over, do you have any fun holiday plans in the works?
I started on SS14 prints about a week after I showcased AW13... Geek...
I'm revisiting a past collection. I want to re-do them one by one over time as the early days had some amazing ideas but I had a student-esque kind of budget to do it. I'm starting with Marabu Stalk nightmare (Irvine Welsh) so prepare for another nightmare in the jungle. Can't wait!
I am planning my holidays around where I plan to sell my SS14 collection, I'm thinking Las Vegas and NYC this time.
