Its that time of the year again. Half days on Fridays and drowsy summer weather might be slowing our production rate, but for the eight new designers comprising the second round of the CFDAs Fashion Incubator, the work has just begun. The Fashion Incubator was born with the help of Target and the New York City Economic Development Corporation in order to give the CFDAs most promising young designers a leg up in the industry by providing low-cost studio space, mentoring, and networking opportunities to whoever is lucky enough to land in the program.
We took a trip to Fashion Incubator on June 7 to check out some of New Yorks hottest designers latest work from this seasons looks to a sneak peak at what to expect for SS13.
ISAORA uses advanced materials to create garments for their mens sportswear brand. For AW12, designers Ricky Hendry and Marc Daniels introduced the beauty of imperfection into their clothes by working with technical innovations without becoming too technical. Many pieces are reversible and cold dying was used to create patterns unique to individual jackets and vests.
This brand doesnt usually work with a lot of color, but SS13 is going to change that. This collection is inspired by the electromagnetic light spectrum and the colors produced when light is shown through a prism. It also plays on abstract and scientific themes while creating a harmony between technology and nature.
Designer Whitney Pozgay created a fantastical collection for AW12. The modern, clean womens wear garments are printed with whimsical planets, white stars filling a yellow sky, flowing soundwaves and other pre-NASA, space-related, dreamy concepts.
Whitney is working with a completely different inspiration for SS13 with a honeymoon to the island of St. Lucia acting as her muse. The tropical vibe promises to produce a rum on the beach state of mind.
For AW12, this tailored, yet relaxed, athletic mens wear brand works from the conceptualization of the urban landscape as a sporting arena, making a passerby wonder if the wearer is just walking the city or jetting off to do some extreme ice climbing. Designer Luis Fernandez produced classic colored garments with a modern twist and incorporated creating more with less with water resistant wools.
When it comes to the staples every man must have, NUMBER:Lab has SS13 covered from swimwear to easy knits. Expect great pieces for travel with some reversible garments. Color blocking will be worked into the collection for this performance brand as well.
Alan Eckstein and Timo Weiland are the masterminds behind this men and womens wear brand. For AW12, the duo based their collection on East Village, the post punk era and the chaos surrounding St. Marks. Alan refers to it as elegant rebellion.
Music plays a reference role for the Timo Weiland brand as does New York style, but the specifics of each inspiration are still being narrowed down for the SS13 collection.
Teenage angst was the inspiration for Daniel Vosovics AW12 womens wear collection. Concepts were based on old photos and favorite high school garments like his old jean jacket. He reinterpreted and gave new life to his old memories to create the collection.
For SS13 Daniel is staying true to his brand and producing grey, slim, slouchy, tomboy pieces for the high functioning New York City woman. One dress can appear to be three separate, very put-together pieces, but in reality, its one garment. The brand is quick and simple, yet chic and sophisticated and functions from day to night.
