Tell us about your collection. When did you launch and what is your underlying design philosophy?
AW16 is a story about freedom, “I AM A MAN” is the title for this collection. There is not only the bondage of spirit from self, but it is also inspired by the rebellious teenager. I launched FENG CHEN WANG after graduating from RCA, but before I did, I prepared a lot to have the brand. I am an emotional designer, I design from my heart and it is important to be honest with myself. I also think that we need to bring something new to fashion. There are no rules.
What are some key items that you will be showing at Capsule for AW16 ? There are some interesting items in collection, I do like all of them, jackets with 3D letters, volume shapes that continue from last collection. I will also bring some sweaters that will be all about stitching letters together. There are also some more details that you only find them through your eyes. For example, I developed 3D letters in this season that they are in different height bulges in one letter, also there are inward 3D letters. I choose denim fabric in this season, also designed a printed ‘denim’. They look like denim but when you touch them, you get a different feeling.
What’s inspiring you now?
Rebellious people, rebellious things. I can feel there are more hopes and future.
Tell us about your professional history. What did you do before launching this label ?
I am living in London for 5 years while finishing my Masters at the Royal College of Art. I love what I am doing, and I love creating menswear, the past few years was the most difficult time in my life, because it was all about finding who I am. I was selected to show with Vfiles at NYFW last September. That was a really amazing experience and I feel that I can do more in fashion world.
Who or what do you think is really making an impact on fashion this year? and why?
J.W. Anderson won both the womenswear and menswear designer of the year at the British Fashion Awards. This represents youth in fashion. On the other hand, there are still lots of things that need to be broken too.
Please tell us about your neighborhood.
I am travelling a lot between London, NYC and Beijing. London is a creative city, I find a lot of inspiration here, especially in East London. I go to the weekend vintage market a lot if I have time. I also travel to China, I respect Chinese handcrafting. My collection requires a lot of time in execution. I require high quality in all the details.
