Designer Inspirations - Michael Bastian

February 12, 2012 BY CAPSULESNEWS

(WeAreTheMarket has invited Jake Gallagher, editor of Wax-Wane.com to contribute a series of articles that delve into the thought process behind the collections.)

After being declared the 2011 CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year, Michael Bastian only continues to evolve and push the envelope of American menswear. Bastian began his career as a buyer and eventually worked his way up to be men's fashion director at Bergdorf Goodman for five years before starting his own line. Bastian was born and bred in the Northeast, and this preppy background works as the foundation for much of his work, but it is the variety of influences that he has picked up throughout his illustrious career that really gives his collections an edge. Michael Bastian spoke with us about his influences for his A/W 2012 collection.

What were your biggest inspirations in creating this collection?

The biggest inspiration this season was this idea of 'The Extra Man'-- those well dressed, handsome, charming single guys that New York hostesses always keep in their back pocket for when they need to balance out their guest list. We actually even found a great article from 1974 in The New York Times that listed the 30 top 'Extra Men' of that time, including Bill Blass, Albert Hadley and Mario Buatta.

How are these influences reflected in this collection?

We drew a lot of inspiration from how those guys in 1974 actually dressed-- always snazzy (which is such a crazy old-fashioned word) even when they weren't wearing a suit.
