Capsule Le Nouveau, our platform for the very new and exciting, is pleased to present Perspective: Darren Skey at Capsule New York Men’s on July 20-21, 2015. Once known primarily as the home of traditional menswear and classic Savile Row tailoring, London now finds itself at the epicenter of the progressive movement in men’s fashion. As the head of menswear at famed London retailer Harvey Nichols, Darren Skey is in the unique position to handpick an international roster of forward-facing designers, giving them an unparalleled platform in the city that embraces them so wholeheartedly. For Perspective, Darren has curated a selection of designers with the vision, design savvy and global audience to keep men’s fashion forging ahead. On the occasion of this exciting presentation, we spoke with Skey about his career, what inspires him and his picks for songs of the summer.

WATM: Tell us about your career trajectory — how you got into this crazy game, where you’ve come from professionally and where you are now?

Darren: I’ve worked in the fashion industry in different capacities for nearly 20 years, spanning the high street sector all the way up to luxury. My background has given me experience on both the merchandising (planning) and buying sides. I am currently Head of Menswear at Harvey Nichols; I look after the group’s 8 doors across the UK and Ireland. I have been in this position for 5 years.

WATM: What’s the best part about your current job?

Darren: There’s very little I dislike about my job. We’re currently undertaking a large refurbishment of our flagship Knightsbridge store and to be involved in this sort of game changing project is hugely exciting. We pride ourselves on sourcing the next big brand or trend and to see these come to fruition gives me great satisfaction. We were the first UK retailer to stock Fear of God and John Elliott, both of which have been great successes, and one of the first UK retailers to drive the growths behind Neil Barrett and Givenchy.

WATM: What are you bringing to Capsule for Le Nouveau’s Perspective section and why?

Darren: For Perspective I’m bringing together an eclectic mix of designers, each of which has a different aesthetic but at the same time has a similar point of view. The brands are all on an upward trajectory and will elevate and add to the current Capsule brand offering. I tried to invite an international mix of brands including Rochambeau and Pyer Moss from NY, Martin Asbjorn from Copenhagen and This is Not Clothing and TDT from UK.

WATM: What inspires you, both within the market and totally removed from it?

Darren: The constantly changing landscape of fashion. Innovations in technology are of utmost importance and a failure to embrace and adapt to this could be disastrous. I love the chase of a new brand or trend and seeing it resonate with our customers, current and new. I also love networking with creatives from around the globe, gaining an insight into the idiosyncrasies of each market and relating them back to mine. It’s also a great way of knowledge sharing. Away from the world of fashion, my children are my biggest inspiration.

WATM: Your three favorite big brands?

Darren: I’m not actually about the big “super” brands, although I greatly appreciate what they do. I wear a lot of Dries Van Noten, Our Legacy and Norse Projects.

WATM: Your three favorite smaller labels?

Darren: I think there is so much talent coming from the smaller brands, be them niche or not. Right now I’d say John Elliot, Matthew Miller and CMMN SWDN.

WATM: Song of the summer?

Darren: Hard to choose one, but any of the following:

Martin Asbjorn

Copenhagen-based Martin Asbjorn founded his eponymous line in 2011 with a goal to fuse sharp and soft tailoring across modern shapes for a new generation consumer.

Pyer Moss

Founded in 2013 by Kerby Jean-Raymond, Pyer Moss is the much buzzed about luxury sportswear brand known for reinventing classic athletic gear and uniforms by adding opulent cues and a refined fit.


At the forefront of the progressive streetwear movement lies New York-based Rochambeau, the experimental yet wearable collection that was launched in 2007 by Lawrence Chandler and Joshua Cooper.

This is Not Clothing

Dubbed a luxury brand and consumerist art movement by This is Not Clothing’s Jam Sutton, this line full of high-concept imagery turns the notion of graphic tees upside-down.

Tourne de Transmission

Founded in 2012 by Graeme Gaughan and Barry Kamen, UK-based Tourne de Transmission is the contemporary menswear collection inspired by interplay between words and images to create newfound ideas and messages.
