Art Of Craft

December 05, 2013 BY MAIA SCHOENFELDER

About a month ago, Art Of Craft was born. The brand aims to give back to charities while focusing on honoring a selection of craftsmen through limited edition product. Three California-based friends came together to create this unique celebration of artisans; expect to see limited edition product from sculptors, an architect, photographers, winemakers, musicians and more. Each item released (on a two week schedule) will be sold online and at select Fred Segal locations. $6 from each piece sold will be sent to the artist's cause of choice.

Today is the launch of their third project, which celebrates the craft of custom car building. We caught up with Derek, one of the co-founders, to ask a few rapid fire questions.

Tell us about the charity aspect. Is this type of cause-related retailing something more brands are doing? We wanted to provide a medium for artisans to not only celebrate but to provide the opportunity to give back to their craft.

How did you select the crafts people? Tell us about each one briefly? Right now we have four projects in the works.

Project #1 celebrating the craft of music through Hugh and Sal Masekela.

Project #2 celebrating the craft of photography through

Project #3 celebrating the craft custom car building through (launches Dec. 5th, today!)

Project # 4 celebrating the craft of brick art through (launches Dec. 12th)

What are some highlights from the exhibition? Icon is bringing both ICON Thriftmaste r as well as Nathan Sawaya the Brick Artist will be showcasing a 5 ft lego human figure.
