A Dose of (capsule) New York: Clae

In a world plagued by Crocs and the like, it's nice to see brands like Clae manning the reconquista of what we wear on our feet. Designer Sung Choi gives us food for thought. (--Antonio Reis)

How did Clae pioneer the athleisure movement? I'm not sure about the term ‘athleisure’, but I believe Clae was the one of the first companies to build a footwear brand around the idea of bridging the gap between sneakers and shoes. The whole philosophy behind Clae is about constructing footwear that can really travel through the different needs of men (from work, to play, even to your wedding day) and seamlessly through day and night. We offer modern interpretations of classic footwear; from styles with a sport heritage like the Russell, to casual and dress-inspired silhouettes, like the Whitman.  We aim to offer our customers versatility, comfort and style for everyday living.  Each piece utilizes quality materials, from butter smooth, full grain leathers to fine suedes. And the construction is top notch.

What are the ingredients for a fresh new collection from Clae?

Some new styles, updates colors and tweaks to our brand classics. We have three new silhouettes for Spring/Summer 2010; the Ellington, the Bruce and the Zissou. The Ellington is Clae’s slimmest profile to date, with a rubber sole and new dress shoe-inspired upper. It’s a traditional lace-up, flipped in casual canvas and luxurious full grain leathers.  The Bruce is a minimalist and sophisticated take on the traditional Chinese slip-on. The modern evolution brings the added value of technical comfort and will be available in four colors, two of which are vegan friendly. Last but not least, the Zissou picks up where our popular Cousteau left off.  It’s built on the same boat-ready platform, featuring an abbreviated lace up closure and neoprene heel tab in contrast pop color. We’ve also added cotton chambray and hemp canvas to the fabric line up. Color highlights for the season include a muted Lemon yellow and strong Steel grey, which are unique in their ability to work as either new neutrals or color pops.

How will you celebrate Clae's SS10 debut in New York ?

I’m looking forward to keeping it simple; hanging with family and my East Coast-based friends who I don’t get to see enough. And eating some good food, of course.
