THE DENIM QUESTION

June 01, 2008 BY CAPSULESNEWS

1947---article-image.jpgThe enduring and perpetual allegiance to denim among men is an article of faith for many in the fashion business, including Kevin Harter of Bloomingdale’s. As vice-president of men’s fashion direction, Harter has been keeping an eye on the upscale department store’s jeans sales and reports that they’re still growing—though he admits that the rate of that growth has leveled somewhat after five years of double-digit increases. As the economy shudders and consumer confidence falters, the question then becomes not whether men will wear denim, but how often and at what price they will buy it—and the answers will determine whether manufacturers and retailers alike have been wise pinning their hopes on jeanswear in these tough times.  For more on this story see Monday’s DNR.
