Candice Clark opened her showroom, Research and Development, in LA’s Cooper Building during the summer of 2013. With a focus on cool, minimalist designs, the majority of the lines hail from Europe, plus one from LA and one from Australia. Clark manages all US sales for Just Female, Callahan, Diarte, Rue Stiic, Storm & Marie, Sita Murt, and Paloma Wool. In addition to parallel design aesthetics, the brands have accessible price points. “They have a clean and cool vibe, and I have to personally like the brand,” said Clark. “I try to find brands that can overlap with our current customer base, and that can also bring in a new customer base at the same time.”
Hands down, one of the coolest brands out of Denmark right now, Just Female embodies the sleek and chic style of Copenhagen. Established in 2006, their clean and sophisticated designs are easy day-to-night pieces, and they love adding leather throughout the line for added cool. While they tend to favor a lot of solids with texture, they add a some pops of color and prints to each collection. Clean lines, simple shapes, and raw details remain consistent throughout each season.
This Spanish brand has been quickly gaining a following over the past few seasons. Based in Barcelona, Paloma Wool is both the name of the line and the designer. She refers to her line as “a project about getting dressed and about space or ideas that are created around the act of getting dressed.” The collections usually have a mix of easy-to-wear separates, sweaters, and printed button-up tops. The colors tend to err on the subtle side, but her watercolor-like illustrations add a unique hand-painted quality.
This Danish line was created in 2010 by Signe Elisabeth Vedel and Kim Vedel Hansen in Copenhagen. The couple, both in work and in romance, stay true to the Danish aesthetic of clean lines and lots of texture. The style of Storm & Marie is effortless, chic, and sophisticated with hints of fun in their flashes of color, prints, and subtle details.
The sole LA brand in the showroom, Callahan specializes in high-quality knitwear. Michelle Callahan founded the line in 2013. Cozy and boyfriend sweaters are what she is most known for, although they brand is most definitely not limited to just those styles. The effortlessly cool line of knits features unique textures and subtle prints to create seasonless essentials collection after collection.
With a focus on high quality, this Spanish brand was founded in 2010 by Ana Diarte. Knits and wovens make up the line, most of which are made with natural fibers using sustainable practices. Ana finds much of her inspiration in natural landscapes, architecture, and modern art. In each collection, she aims to create elevated, timeless pieces with clean lines and a nod to masculine styles.
Based in Australia’s Byron Bay, Rue Stiic takes inspiration from places the designer has lived in and traveled to—coastal Australian towns, Southern California, and Bali. Designer Jillian Beed started the brand in 2013 to offer pieces to take you from the city to the beach, and beyond. With a bohemian aesthetic, the line focuses on swimwear, ready-to-wear basics, and collection pieces with a beachy, vintage-inspired vibe.
