Showroom Spotlight: International Playground

January 13, 2016 BY CAPSULE

New York-based International Playground showroom has been a destination for discovering new, emerging designers from around the world. Founded by 2 industry vets -- Johnny Pizzolato and Virginia Craddock, IP features an array of brands for men and women, in addition to a SoHo boutique where their designers are sold to the public.

(C) Tell us about International Playground. What do you specialize in?
JP: International Playground specializes in inspired, international and locally-based designers, with a great story to tell and innovative designs.

(C) Who started the showroom and when? Why? Tell us your backstory.
JP: International Playground was founded in 2009 by me, Johnny Pizzolato, and Virginia Craddock. We were friends first and briefly worked together at Carlos Campos. I was the Market Director there at the time, and I brought Virginia on to help with our production as she was an experienced Production Manager. We worked really well together and were both thinking to start something new--I wanted to start a showroom and Virginia wanted to open a store, both for emerging designers. We merged our concepts and International Playground was born. We traveled to Paris, London, and Copenhagen to meet with designers and sort of scope out the market. We were both really feeling Scandinavian design when we started and this is still in our DNA. We came back to NYC and produced a couple of pop up store/showroom concepts during fashion week and around the holidays, and opened our first store in March of 2010.

(C) Where are you located?
JP: We are currently located in SoHo, New York, on Broome Street between Mercer and Greene. The shop and showroom are in the same building.

(C) Which brands are you bringing to Capsule?
JP: We bring almost everything we've ever sold to Capsule! For Men's, we are bringing Soulland, Tourne de Transmission, and Mercer Amsterdam to NYC and Soulland and Mercer Amsterdam to Las Vegas. For women's market in NYC we are bringing KOWTOW, H Fredriksson, Upstate, Mary Meyer, and Mercer Amsterdam as well a lot of new collections that we are so excited about working with including Dzojchen, Eve Gravel, MaryMeJimmyPaul, Alas, and Tucker.

(C) What trends are you excited about for AW16?
I am writing to you from Pitti Uomo in Florence, so I am seeing a lot of great new trends including technical fabrics, embroidery and embellishment, oversized pant silhouettes, and a whole lot more. I am really excited about how technology is coming together with fashion. We work with Chromat who I feel like is one of the leading designers in the fashion technology space, and what she is working on with Intel for this season is so DOPE! Hopefully we see these innovations and inventions become trends--I am ready for the future.

(C) Do you have any big news to report for AW16?
JP: We are moving our European satellite office from Berlin to Copenhagen. Soulland and Tourne de Transmission just had amazing shows in London, we have two great shows coming up during Fashion Week--Kenneth Ning as part of NYMFW and Chromat as part of MADE NYFW, and we always have something up our sleeve, stay tuned.
