Shopkeeper: LaRae and Wendy Kangas of Duo, NYC

May 24, 2016 BY CAPSULE

With nearly eight years under their cute vintage belts, the sisters behind New York City’s Duo have shopkeeping down. The fresh and airy store came about after LaRae spent some time studying in Australia and Wendy had a flourishing career in merchandising in NYC. They are true pros at mixing independent labels with an edited collection of vintage, which they source themselves. As for new goods, they have a standout mix in those, too—apparel from Belgium-based Revisited and Vancouver’s Priory, shoes from LA-based The Palatines, Henne Organic Skincare from Nevada, and Brooklyn’s own Fay Andrada.

“We live in the East Village and it’s our favorite neighborhood,” said the duo. “We like that it’s laid back and has a mix of all types of New Yorkers. East 9th Street is an old school community lined with small shops. Some of our neighbors stores have been open for over 30 years. It's a special block.” We asked the sisters where they like to hang out around their hood and they gave us the lowdown on their absolute go-tos for noodles, coffee, cocktails, and more in the East Village. – Sydney Pfaff
