Shopkeep: Chau and Trang Nguyen, Myth & Symbol

July 29, 2016 BY CAPSULE

Sister team Chau and Trang Nguyen opened their well-curated Houston shop, Myth & Symbol, in July 2012. Trang brought along her experience in corporate retail and ecommerce to handle the operations, while Chau kept her day job as an art teacher (and continues to do so today).

With a roster of lines like Black Crane, Dusen Dusen, Ilana Kohn, Building Block, Janessa Leone, and Maryam Nassir Zadeh, it’s no surprise that Myth & Symbol is one of the top go-tos for independent labels with fast-growing followings.

“We are in the Rice Village, which is one of the few Houston shopping areas that is pedestrian friendly,” said Trang. “There are a lot of independent mom and pop shops, so people in the area are more in-tune to shop local and support small businesses.” As nearby residents, the sisters have their pulse on where to go, eat, and shop in the area and rounded up their favorites here.

Huynh Restaurant

If I am lucky enough to get a Saturday morning off, I'll go to Huynh for their "bit tet" (Vietnamese steak & eggs served on a skillet with a baguette). One of their specialities is “Bun Bo Hue” a spicier version of “pho” with lemongrass and bone marrow. They supposedly let the broth simmer for over 24 hours!

The Menil Collection

The museum isn’t too far from my home, so I enjoy taking walks here after work. Besides the main Menil building, the campus is composed of the Cy Twombly Gallery, Rothko Chapel, Byzantine Fresco Chapel, and Dan Flavin Installation Hall. P.S. It’s free too!

La Guadalupana Bakery & Cafe

I loving dipping their almond croissants in their cinnamon coffee, ordering a refreshing Vampiro (beet, orange, and carrot juice), and finishing a meal with some house made churros. Anthony Bourdain recently made a stop here to film his Houston segment for Parts Unknown. This little cafe is already packed so I’m anticipating an even longer wait time once the episode airs.

Boheme is my go-to spot for drinks, mainly because it’s got an impressive food menu and my favorite bar for a mojito. It’s a very mixed, diverse, and unpretentious crowd.

The Class Room

If Myth & Symbol were a boy, we would be the Class Room. They're our “unofficial” brother store, just around the corner from us. The shop carries brands like Common Projects, Engineered Garments, and Norse Projects. They also have a resident barber and host evening yoga classes with a live DJ.
