Urban Outfitters, the ever growing company known for selling and featuring everything from kitschy, funky, hip and hipster items, to designer collabs and luxury brands has been expanding across the world at a very rapid pace. We sat down with Kris Babet from Urban Outfitters UK to hear a bit about the retail world, his thoughts on the upcoming SS14 trends and the changing world of style and menswear.
What do you expect to be a major trend or must- have item/classification for SS14?
We're definitely seeing the 90's sports/streetwear trend sticking around, so expect to see lots of oversized graphic T-Shirts and technical sports wear fabrics. There's also a smarter more minimal trend coming through so moving on from the black on black of AW13 to more of an All white everything look. I'm looking forward to seeing how this works when mixed with the aforementioned 90's look. i think it could be a real winner.
Which collections are you most looking forward to seeing and why?
There are a few, Garderobe looks interesting, Our Legacy is always good. I love Kidda by Christopher Shannon and cant wait to launch that for AW13, Souland is another brand that goes from strength to strength and the Libertine Libertine boys are killing it.
How do you see men's style evolving for next summer?
Well SS13 saw a real move on from the heritage workwear trend that has dominated menswear recently so I expect to see a continuation of the sports & street wear trend. I'm anticipating we will see more sportswear coming through, especially in the fabrications being used and then off the back of that I'm seeing a really clean, minimalist aesthetic coming through.
Do you sell anything in your store besides fashion? What's hot now?
Urban Outfitters is known for selling more than just fashion, we offer a whole lifestyle concept from Fashion to homewares, music and accessories. We have recently developed vinyl houses in our stores so thats exciting and is having a great reaction.
Whats in store for your store? Do you have any news, or major plans you'd like to share with us?
Here in Europe we are continuing to develop the number of stores we have, currently we are at 38 doors across Europe. We are opening a new London store in Camden towards the end of July, it'll be a new concept too as we are taking over the old market and the store will retain some of that heritage by paying homage to the buildings past and taking inspiration from the market stalls when merchandising the store. We are also launching a pop up in gallerie lafayette in Paris, opening another German store in Cologne, we currently have 5 open, and opening our first store in Holland. Amsterdam is opening in October and is going to be a particularly big store so we are all very excited by this one! There are more to come but thats all i can reveal right now!
