The atmosphere at J. Crew's Spring/Summer 2012 presentation yesterday was quite calm and relaxed (or at least it was before Beyoncé surprised guests with a special appearance). Thanks in part to Frank Muytjens, the label's head menswear designer, J. Crew has slowly become known for casual, yet stylish, designs that withstand the sartorial tests of time. With a decent amount of color (and lots of layering), the collection appeared to have just the right mix of tailored pieces and basics. The trim suits, striped knits and lightweight outerwear were definite highlights as were the polka dot shorts and a slim-fitting blazer in a Black Watch tartan pattern. Also hard to miss were the special edition boat shoes produced as part of a collaboration with Maine-based footwear label Quoddy. Look out for the pieces as they're due to hit select stores sometime early next year. -Adrian Brinkley
