Milan's Salone Standout: Nanimarquina Rugs and Textiles

Words: Enrico Grigoletti

Everyone should visit Milan at least twice in their lifetime—once during a random week and another time during the Salone del Mobile, probably the most important event of the year for the city. Every street is bursting with exhibitions and trying to spot something that truly stands out is challenging. This year I decided to focus on the fair itself, which is the area where the real business happens and where you can find the more established firms.

One of the standout collections at last month’s Salone del Mobile in Milan was the Chillida collection by Nanimarquina. Founded in 1987, Nanimarquina is a company leader in designing rugs and textile accessories. The history of the company is based on a simple idea--to design rugs-- and due to the not extensive range of products it’s safe to say that they’ve been successful for the past 25 years. Having collaborated with some celebrated design names– from Ron Arad to Martì Guixé – the company celebrated its anniversary during Salone del Mobile with a capsule collection that pays homage to the artworks of Eduardo Chillida—the Spanish Basque sculptor notable for his monumental abstract works. Based on a chronological selection of his work, from Figura Humana 1948 to Manos 1995, all of the rugs are hand made using various techniques and materials like wool, silk and mohair.

Art forms part of what hasn’t been done yet, what you still don’t believe in. It’s something that is apart from you, in front of you; something you have to look for.- Eduardo Chillida
