Do you have any side hustles or hobbies that you engage in on top of your primary job?

I've always been a lover of art in all its forms—I sing blues and jazz when I'm not designing.

What are you listening to these days?

Electric Guest, Little Dragon, and a ton of classical music.

Did you do anything fun this summer?

I'm just about to head to Vietnam for two weeks before heading back for NYFW. I left Vietnam at age 3 and this is the first time I'm going back to my country of origin—I'm so excited about what it will inspire!

The collection:

What are the overall key influences for SS13?

The collection is heavily influenced by the preparation of returning to Vietnam. In the process, I doused myself with movies and books with Vietnam as location. It is a reflection on my childhood, what being a child means and how that translates into me currently. The ideals of beauty come from all aspects of life but I believe the foundation blocks come from the first images, hazy images, of beauty when we are children. Vietnam has had a history of war for so many years. In the fight to attain independence, the destruction that resulted is also paired with the beauty that came after the chaos subsided. I embraced the child lost in a foreign land I call Vietnam. Beauty comes from sometimes the most tormented of places and can come out pure and untouched.

What are some key colors, fabrics, and items?

Cotton eyelets and silks in shell pinks, bright guava corals, black, lace, and polka dots combined.

What's new for your brand for SS13?

We are about to launch our online shop!

Frank Ocean.

Did you do anything fun this summer?

I got to travel all over the world and eat all sorts of weird stuff. I feel more cultured.

The collection:

What are the overall key influences for SS13?

This time we focused on women's ease at being sensual in an urban world. It all started with a song from Astrud Gilberto, called Bossa Na Praia, recorded in 1967. This was a perfect representation of the feminine hyper-sensual but soft nonchalance, right before the 70's hit. We wanted to catch that last bit of naiveté, the remaining romanticism in the aesthetic of the late 60's soft porn and its blurry visual, and juxtapose it with the architecture scene that was happening during the same period in Brasilia with Niemeyer.

What are some key colors, fabrics, and items?

The SS13 color palette is a mix of beach, jungle, and urbanism. We wanted it to definitely remain naive and pure with lots of off-whites, pearl greys, light yellows, and soft salmon, but also were excited to bring in contrasts, like some iconic brights from that time frame as the core-bronze and sulphur-yellow.

Our two prints, granite and giant banana leaves, provide rhythm in the collection with the urban-versus-nature duality. We remained with all natural fibers this season with silks and cottons, juxtaposing the crispiness of one with the softness of the other, which allowed us to play in material contrasts while remaining in tonal settled combinations.

We also focused on the feeling of each material on the skin—that is where we wanted to bring the softness and sensuality the most. Each fabric, even the prints, have been sand washed in order to fade them and give them that peachy feel, while we kept the construction of each style very architectural.

What's new for your brand for SS13?

I'm not at liberty to speak about it, but we have some huge things in the works. It has a lot to do with the Asian markets. I'll keep you posted on that one.

Do you have any side hustles or hobbies that you engage in on top of your primary job?

Well, we have a shop, A Thousand Picnics, with our friend Erica Bradbury—that's sort of a side-to-middle hustle. We also freelance in the city—Peter for CAD and Phoebe for design.

A lot of Love, some Nick Cave, always Neil Young in the summer, a little bit of Biggie Smalls.

I have a 2 1/2 year old, that's a hustle.

Bon Iver and French podcasts.

Did you do anything fun this summer?

I did a lot of beaching with my friends and family. We surfed really small waves and made a lot of sand castles!

The collection:

What are the overall key influences for SS13?

The color and prints were all taken from the vantage point of where I like to sit on my favorite beach. The silhouettes are easy and bohemian in a fashion forward way.

What are some key colors, fabrics, and items?

We have an African print silk in deep blue with earthy tones. And a flume print that looks like a retired beach shirt, one that would have wooden buttons, it's an inky blue with bleeding pink tones. Both speak of the coastline and are in fairly romantic dresses and cool sleek silk pants.

What's new for your brand for SS13?

Yes! We've added a selection of clutches to our line made in limited edition fabrics from my travels. Also, candles and recycled prints into our home collection.

IT'S OKAY MY DEAR

Name: Ashley Cheeks

Title: Owner/Creative Director

Twitter handle: @itsokaymydear

Where do you live?

Brooklyn, NY.

Describe your personal style:

I usually keep it cute and casual. Comfy tees tied in knots, and high-waisted shorts. If I'm going out on the town I like to wear somehting playful and flirty like our peekaboo dress from SS12 or a fun vintage number.

What style advice would you share with others?

Be comfortable in your own skin—wear what makes you feel cute! If you are confident in what you're wearing you will pull off anything, even if it's a little crazy!

What book are you currently reading or want to read?

I just got a subscription to National Geographic for my birthday—so I'm very much looking forward to exploring that every month!

Favorite restaurant?

Walter Foods in Brooklyn.

Favorite hotel?

The Omni Hotel in New Orleans.

Favorite thing you own?

That is really tough! Besides my kitties, I would say my vintage fur lined cape!

Favorite blog?

Lolitas.se for fashion, art, and design. Cuteoverload.com because looking at tiny animals immediately makes you feel better about life!

Best thing you ever ate in NYC?

A banana and strawberry ice cream from Ferrara's in Little Italy.

Do you have any side hustles or hobbies that you engage in on top of your primary job?

I'm a big vintage scavenger, so I'm always scouting things either online or in thrift shops! My eBay watch list is always crazy long!

What are you listening to these days?

A lot of Pandora—classical piano sonatas when I'm pattern making (helps me relax and focus!), otherwise Grimes or The Black Keys.

Did you do anything fun this summer?

I went down south for two weeks visiting family and scouring the countryside for junk. Literally. Went on the World's Longest Garage Sale!

The collection:

What are the overall key influences for SS13?

I feel that SS13 is very heavily influenced by nostalgia. The romanticized version of young love and heartache. Picking flowers, running through cotton fields, dance recitals, and state fairs.

What are some key colors, fabrics, and items?

Pretty, ballerina inspired dresses, cute shorts and top sets. This season we made our own custom print of little abstract legs and shoes! We're also bringing some accessories this time around too, hand painted collars, headbands, and poolside turbans.

What's new for your brand for SS13?

Hustle more than ever before! We're working on building the brand into more accessories—and even household items. My future goal is to have a brick and mortar shop. Continually working towards that dream!
