Capsule Paris Preview: Maiami

March 01, 2016 BY CAPSULE

Berlin based Maiami is a collection of handknitted sweaters, cardigans and accessories with a modern outlook, achieved through the use of color, the placement of motifs and the combination of knit with other materials.

Maiami combines premium hand-knitted designs with a modern, urban aesthetic. The play between contrasts and contradictions is the signature of the designer, and is visible in the overall look of the label.

For AW 16-17, the collection was inspired by movies of the 70’s including Straw Dogs, The Getaway, Bullitt and an enchanting young Meryl Streep in The Deer Hunter.

Maiami plays with opposites and disruptions, elements that can be seen as well within the new collection. Textures are achieved by combining different yarn qualities and graphical elements or accents in strong colors contrast against softer shades. The classic mohair qualities are amplified with pastel and saturated tones, including royal and turquoise, while structural patterns and special color gradients create textile surface.

The collection includes the classics, made from Mohair and new Merino-Alpaca-Blends, graphic Motif-Sweaters, and a lot of new styles, which are knitted using large needles and multiple strands of yarn. Alongside this, fine, feminine styles make an appearance, as well. Accessories are given more attention with the line being replenished by fine knitted cashmere items.

For AW16 key items include - The Pleated Mohair Cardigan -- a lightweight coarse knit Mohair Cardigan in royal blue with a color gradient at the neckline consisting of soft colors like rose, caramel, antique pink and marsala.

The Mystic Sweater is hand knitted with large needles which combines voluminous mohair with stripes of a shiny cotton / viscose yarn which adds transparency and a somehow glamorous look to the piece.

See the collection at Capsule Paris, March 4-6, at Espace Tapis Rouge.
