MadeMe's SS 13 collection is going to help you be the girl with the most cake.
Inspired by Hole's Live Through This album, the collection takes on 90's grunge from the perspective of the most infamous female icon of the movement: Courtney Love. Designer Erin Magee says, "I've even taken it as far as to learn guitar. I learned every song from the album, lucky for me she's a really shitty guitar player." The girl side of grunge has produced some of the most recognizable statement looks in fashion from the 1990's through the current season. For every time Courtney Love has taken a pill, a girl has donned leather pants, a ripped band tee, red lipstick and a bleach hair treatment.
MadeMe SS13 capitalizes on some of Love's looks before she frequented Givenchy Fashion Week events. These days you're probably want to look more like Frances Bean in that editorial Hedi Slimane shot more than Courtney. But regardless which one of the ladies connected to Cobain you love, this collection is a reflection of the development of an aesthetic that screams strong ladies with loud voices and honest weaknesses.
"It really started when I was ten, and that was when I started getting into bands," explains Magee. "It's totally nostalgic for me to look back on that time." The Riot Grrrl movement gave women a voice that was anti, scream-your-heart-out, and feminist while being delicate, vulnerable and open at the same time. The feelings of empowerment associated with that ethos still have roots in music coming out of bands like White Lung and Wax Idols, but the expression of it has changed into something more developed, specific, and overt.
Like any good fashion designer, Magee's collection mirrors the cultural shift and the clothes balance their hard edge with smart, sophisticated cuts and silhouettes. Inserting some purposeful restraint into the clothes is an astute reading of the way grunge culture has changed for female musicians. Complete with a leopard-collared motorcycle jacket, an acid wash denim and white lace sleeveless buttondown, and an allover leopard print peacoat, the collection takes from the 90's but stays relevant in important ways.
MadeMe has always been Erin Magee's side project. Working full time at Supreme for almost a decade, the industry veteran started her line as an outlet for creative expression. Like so many organic creations, the response to her project was overwhelming and 5 seasons later, MadeMe is in the game more than ever. After collaborations with Vans, Stussy and Schott blew up, Magee has designed a full 20-piece collection for SS 13. "This is the first time Ive been on the real fashion calendar. Its a ton of work."
