Turkey has long been known for its uniquely cozy and effective towels. The Turkish towel (AKA peshtamal, peshtemal, pestamal, pestemal) has historically been used to cover oneself in the Turkish bath (hammers). Traditionally made of 100% Turkish cotton and produced by local artisans on hand-woven looms, Turkish towels have been a luxury item for over 600 years. Modern day towels have evolved and other natural fiber blends are being used, as well such as: bamboo/cotton and linen/cotton blend towels.
Canada-based label Plaj (Turkish for beach), is evolving this traditional item for modern day usage, and for SS17, the Canadian-based brand will offer towels, beach blankets, capes, and kids’ clothes in fresh colorways, using new fibers, and will even offer espadrilles from Spain made in collaboration with Jute Laune.
