One of my favourite new pieces in the collection is our Oaxaca Tote in hologram and this new use of material definitely calls for an ‘Introducing’ post to delve deeper into how the bag came to be in the line:
For the last year everyone at the studio has been excited about anything and everything holographic (myself included) and I was excited to try to incorporate this ever changing material into the line. I liked that the holographic feeling was so synthetic and flashy and thought it would look good contrasted with the earthiness of the natural, hand crafted look of our existing pieces. Initially I experimented with the hologram transfer on EVERY material I could get my hands on but finally found it looked and felt the best (and passed all the required quality tests) on a thick natural cotton. I kept the tote design as basic and neutral as possible to let the hologram be the focal point of the piece and I crinkled the surface to add texture and colour dimension. Because this was such a departure from S&C’s usual look I kept the holographic design to one piece but I hope to continue adding it’s playful rainbow charm to more items in future collections. As the weather warms up this bag continues to be my go-to and every time I use it I get stopped and asked about it. Now if I could just remember to carry business cards….
