FW13 Trend Report: Contrasting Jacket Sleeves

Spring is here, but it can't feel any farther away. Winter settled down and made itself very comfortable, and it doesn't look like it's leaving anytime soon. It's like a lousy, deadbeat friend turned roommate that's looking for a job in order to get back on their feet. Except this lazy oaf that has been here since November bringing snow on Election Day (remember that) hasn't left and now it's March. Though meteorologists are optimistic about the sunshine and sprouting leaves, we're not, and it gives us more reason to look forward to FW '13. Sure this industry has a habit of looking passed the current season to focus on what's to come, but this time around we don't feel so guilty.

Heavy coats and thick sweaters haven't strayed far from our minds and FW '13 is chock full of them. The feeling of warmth is as enticing as the design and color of the piece itself this time around. Not much has changed this season compared to FW '12 and other winter seasons prior. FW '13 pushed for a more creative, innovative design as opposed the classic and traditional designs we're familiar with, and it further proves that menswear is coming into its own as a profitable segment in the fashion industry. One trend we have our eye on are jackets with contrasting sleeves. Last season (or is it still FW '12 with this frigid weather?) the design was prevalent in womenswear. Long coats and cropped jackets were accompanied by leather sleeves. In menswear, Junya Watanabe introduced a varsity jacket inspired duffle coat, Simon Spurr combined a rich camel wool body with technical leather sleeves, and Yigal Azrouel took a cropped moto jacket in a new direction by mixing wool and leather instead of sticking to just one.

This design is not revolutionary however. Take a wool body and throw on contrasting raglan sleeves and you got yourself a varsity jacket. FW '11 was the season of the varsity jacket, but this time around, designers are continuing to find new ways to interpret the design through other jacket types. Toggle coats, trench coats, bomber jackets, and blazers are taking cues from varsity jackets, but with new spins. Wool bodies are joined with leather sleeves with moto detailing, leather bodies have wool sleeves, and quilted and down warming systems are being introduced as sleeves. Now if only we can shop for the collections... FW '13 will hit stores in the latter months of the year obviously, but that doesn't mean you can't put together a shopping list now. Keep up with our Trend Reports to know what will be new and exciting in the latter months of the year.
