For Vogue's Fashion's Night Out in Milan, it looked like everyone had left their home to enjoy this warm September evening just a few days before the start of the Fashion Week. At the second floor of 10 Corso Como, Galleria Carla Sozzani presented a retrospective of Peter Lindbergh, the master of fashion photography. Lindbergh is famous for having portrayed the beauty and femininity of 90's top models such as Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Milla Jovovich, Kate Moss, Kristen McMenamy, and Naomi Campbell. He specializes in capturing the models in ordinary spaces with the natural attitude of any woman in usual moments.
The first series of the exhibition, Known-Images of Women, is a selection of some of those iconic images. The second series of the exhibition, The Unknown, was a recent (2011) personal project which had been exposed for the first time at the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing. It's a visual journey interpreted by Milla Jovovich and inspired by his recent movie series, "Invasion," which mixes the glamour of Hollywood, the German cinema by Friz Lang, and science fiction.
His ability to portray women's pure beauty without trapping it in stereotypes or artificial visions, even in his most fictional shootings, is admirableit's fashion photography at its peak. It is guaranteed to bring a sense of peace, comfort, and a bit of nostalgia, and is sure to remind us all just why we love fashion.
