Getting into some of the world’s best stores is a dream of many a fashion student, but the road to getting noticed by top shops can often take years if not several seasons of brand building. New on the London fashion scene, Renee Bedell can boast that her AW14 graduate collection from Kingston University was picked up by one of London’s most directional stores – LN-CC, giving her the instant recognition that many designer strive to achieve. Bedell’s collection for that season, “Our Indigo”, was inspired by handmade Chinese indigo tribal fabrics, combined with traditional English suitings, mirroring her own personal identity, having come from both worlds.
Tailoring, and craftsmanship weigh heavily in Renee Bedell’s aesthetic, and the designer’s well constructed jackets, and wide leg trousers cut in tribal fabrications are signature pieces of her inaugural collection. Bedell considers construction, and function while pushing the envelope of style when creating her progressive menswear. Drawing on her unique approach to creating fashion, the London based designer considers herself a product designer, rather than a fashion designer. Bedell plays with fabrics, layering laser cut indigos, suedes and denims with unique results that are fresh but familiar.
Now embarking on her second season, Renee is inspired by several fabrications that she’s been working with in several bespoke projects — a dip dyed indigo, and a silk cotton Japanese shibori cloth. Expect to see more hand embroidery, prints that echo the embroidered circles and laser cut denim for AW15. Check out what this rising star has to offer for AW15 at the upcoming Capsule Paris Mens show.
