Montenegro born, Stefan Miljanic started Gilded Age in 2006. Miljanic's intention was to produce jeans that were built to last in this age of fast fashion and mass production. He went against the grain by handcrafting his jeans as opposed to using machinery for the entire production process. Handpicked materials, hand-dyed yarns, Miljanic took the time to design and create his jeans from scratch. He had an obsession with the Industrial Revolution and the manufacturing methods of that era. What came out were jeans displaced from another era, filled with rich history though fresh and brand new. Jeans with age, longevity, and well-traveled. One of Miljanic's hobbies is art, his work on Gilded Age is proof that he can convey a story with any canvas.
Gilded Age expanded beyond jeans and into casual menswear. Today, men's shirting, knitwear, and leather jackets accompany the popular jeans in a full collection. For SS14, Gilded Age continues to explore the rebellious nature of men. The collection captures raw energy, a need to journey alone, the thrill of exploration into the unknown even if danger is fast approaching. The poster boy for this collection is James Dean, most known for movie Rebel Without a Cause, the most notable figure for rebellion, angst, and being a loner.
Miljanic recreates the 1950s with light wash, slightly worn, and broken-in vintage jeans. A selection of jeans will be over dyed as well in colors: silver, pale yellow, aged green, khaki, and an aged white. The most-popular jean fits, the Morrison slim jean and the Baxten slim straight leg, have been respectively hand sanded in recycled yarn and hand-crafted in a deep shade of red on linen/cotton selvage jeans. Be on the lookout for a capsule collection in the season called the 'Annuit Coeptis Collection' which will recreate iconic vintage American style jeans in the highest quality, luxury Japanese denim (Annuit Coeptis cotton is handmade and handcrafted Japanese denim cloth woven out of Zimbabwean cotton).
We have our eyes on two jeans that will be a part of the "Art of Denim" exhibit this fall. These jeans will be a part of a 15 to 20 piece art collection, and will show at Florence for Pitti Uomo 84. "Something really cool is being brewed at Gilded Age," Miljanic added. Now that we can count on.
