Capsule Best in Show: Elaine YJ Lee

January 21, 2015 BY STEVE DOOL

Capsule Best In Show is a series where our friends in the menswear industry give us the scoop on what they believe to be the best piece at Capsule for Autumn/Winter 2015, how they’d style it and why they need it in their wardrobes.

Elaine YJ Lee, Managing Editor, Selectism (@elaineyjlee)

Item: Novesta x Matthew Miller sneakers

As a female voice in the male dominated New York offices of Selectism (and a former Capsule intern, once upon a time), Elaine offers a unique take on menswear. As she tells us below, that influence goes both ways, with certain flourishes from the boys making their way into her wardrobe.

What drew you to this particular piece?

Not only is this sneaker a unique collaboration between Novesta and Matthew Miller, it's also made with fabric from Kvadrat, the Danish textile company that Raf Simons is known to love. I love that Novesta is one of the most comfortable casual shoes out there, so it's all the better that they've heightened their level of sophistication by working with Kvadrat. The texture of the shoe's upper is subtle, so it's really only noticeable to those who recognize the Kvadrat name -- it's kinda snobby, but we all are in a way, right?

How does this piece work with your wardrobe or aesthetic (even if it’s meant for guys)?

I wasn't a good sneaker wearer (still don't think that I really am) until I started working in menswear. My aesthetic is still changing and molding every day; I go from sporty to girly to street to weird, all in the same work week. But I can see these sneakers being styled any which way, like with a casual summer dress or rolled-up jeans and a t-shirt or even a button-up. I have way too many heels and boots, so I should start investing more in fashion sneakers like this. I think I will start with Novesta.

What item from your wardrobe would you pair this with?

I can visualize this with a flowy, silky white top and heather gray joggers. Sneakers and joggers, every day! I hate to admit that I'm part of this trend but it's just too good. And comfortable.
