Brand To Watch: Public Supply

August 07, 2015 BY CAPSULE

At Capsule, nothing gets us excited like a great notebook. And, we love supporting good causes. Enter Public Supply – a visionary company with a thoughtful mission, and creatively inspiring stationery products.

Public Supply is a for-profit company that produces responsibly sourced and well crafted writing, art, and office essentials. The company channels 25% of profits from every sale to a teacher in a high-need classroom, who will use the money for a project that drives creativity. All design work on our products is done in Brooklyn, New York, and all products are sustainably sourced in the United States.

We touched based with co-founder Adam London to find out more as they prepare to come to Capsule LV. Find them in the Sundries section.

Tell us about your collection? What makes your brand unique or special?

Public - Supply designs and creates responsibly-sourced and well-crafted writing, art, and office essentials. Every product is designed in Brooklyn and made in USA. Our notebooks are built for durability with the environment in mind: each holds thick and luxurious FSC and Rainforest Alliance certified paper. We also care deeply about supporting and sustaining creative arts classrooms in public schools, which is why we channel 25% of profits from every sale to a teacher in a high-need classroom who will use the money for projects that drive creativity.

What’s new for SS16?

We are thrilled to introduce our latest notebook collaboration at Capsule 2015, Las Vegas. Public - Supply teamed up with Ty Williams, an artist whose work focuses primarily on the sea and the coastline as his subject. His work is playfully sarcastic and fancifully sublime with an element of innocence and heartbreak. A limited run of 750 notebooks will available at Capsule Las Vegas, online, and at select retailers worldwide.

What inspires your designs?

Utility and quality is the starting point for the things we make. In many ways it was an instinctive decision to make notebooks and pencils. We use those things every day to sketch and write and tinker, so our process involved working out how we could make them more pleasing, or durable, or give them a more interesting story. We continue to be inspired by people and companies that make beautiful and functional products. We want our notebooks to not only look great but feel and behave a certain way. For us, that means engaging in rigorous product testing and development in tandem with our desire to create something honest, useful, and attractive.

How did you get into the industry? What’s your back story?

Public - Supply formed when a group of like-minded friends (architects, teachers, artists, technologists) came together with shared passions. As a team, we were equally committed to creating distinctive, high-quality products, and to making a difference by giving public school teachers the resources they need to help their students grow through creative work. We believe that whether students are painting, acting, singing, writing, or even coding, creativity helps students develop critical thinking, communication skills, and confidence.
