A Dose of (capsule) NY Women's: Boxing Kitten

August 26, 2010 BY CAPSULESNEWS

Boxing Kitten's vintage-inspired pieces celebrate "the spirit and lives of mid-century American women" with "designs modernized for the women of today and the future." After graduating from college and working as a buyer at a small boutique, the designer Maya Lake began designing and making custom garments for friends and family. The designs quickly garnered celebrity fans such as Erykah Badu, and after some word of mouth Boxing Kitten was created. The line now counts Beyonce, Solange, and Rihanna amongst their clientele. Lake describes the line as "Ethnic Rockabilly". Boxing Kitten combines colorful African textiles known as Ankara, or Wax Hollandais. The line also has a vintage inspiration with subtly sexy silhouettes. The SS2011 collection is inspired by the quirky, powerful vixens in the film cult classic by Russ Meyer, "Faster Pussycat Kill! Kill!" This collection shows a different edgier side of the Boxing Kitten woman while retaining the flirty and playful attitude that the line is known for. While Boxing Kitten is known for the use of colorful and bold prints, the Ss11 collection is built on black and white making it much more silhouette focused. Boxing Kitten recently collaborated with indie footwear brand Osborn. More pics, after the jump. View the full SS11 collection at (capsule) women's, Sept 21-22 in NYC.
